George Stroumboulopoulos
- A Conversation
George was born in Malton, Ontario, and was raised in Toronto by his mother. He started his media career as a DJ for a radio station in Kelowna, British Columbia. He then moved back to Toronto to work for FAN 590 AM, as a talk show host.
After working in radio for over four years, George took a job as a VJ for MuchMusic, where he not only hosted, but also produced shows like The Punk Show, The MuchLOUD, MuchNews, and The New Music.
George was also part of the CBC show The Greatest Canadian, where he was advocate for Canada’s “father of medicare” Tommy Douglas, who later ended up winning said contest.
He then hosted The Strombo Show, a Sunday night talk radio show. The Strombo Show first aired on an AM station in Toronto as well as one in Montreal, but then transferred to the Corus Network, where the show became mostly music. It then aired in Vancouver, Winnipeg, Hamilton, and London Ontario. In 2009, The Strombo Show became a part of CBC Radio 2.
The Hour is one of George’s most popular projects, and is the only late-night talk show in Canada. It presents a mix of news and celebrity gossip, and it covers everything from politics, pop culture, the environment, human rights, entertainment, sports and even more. In September 2010, The Hour changed its name to George Stroumboulopoulos Tonight. Over the years, the show has won a total of 8 Gemini Awards.
George has also been involved in a lot of charity work. He, along with George Stroumboulopoulos Tonight and David Suzuki, is a sponsor of the 'One Million Acts of Green' Internet Website. The site encourages Canadians to share acts they have done to help the environment, through the website. George has also been involved in hosting charity events and benefit concerts, such as the 'HipHop4Africa' Mandela Children's Fund Canada and the CapAids February 2006 Toronto benefit. Along with Cheryl Hickey and Ben Mulroney, he hosted Canada for Haiti, to encourage help and raise awareness among Canadians about the devastating earthquake in Haiti.
In addition to this, George has recently been named Ambassador for the United Nations' World Food Program (March 2011).
